Jagoba Arrasate: “It is a tough loss”

Osasuna head coach Jagoba Arrasate spoke to reporters after the match.

Osasuna head coach Jagoba Arrasate addressed reporters after his team’s 2-1 loss to Deportivo La Coruña at Estadio Abanca-Riazor on Monday night. The Berriatua native analyzed what he believed led to the defeat.

“We did not start well. Early on, we gave them two gifts, but Sergio Herrera was impressive and kept us in the game,” Arrasate said. “After that, we won the ball back and scored by pressing, which allowed us to finish the first half in good shape.

“We knew in the second half that Dépor would come after us. They have depth to change the game, and their first goal hurt because it came from a play where we were controlling the ball in midfield, lost it, and then conceded a free kick. Between their fans and their substitutes, they gained momentum while we lost possession. Ultimately, we were defending in our own box and Adama Traoré made a great play for the cross and the goal.

“It’s a tough loss for us. Away from home, we conceded two last week and two this week. Worse yet, we started this game with the lead. We need to be more solid on the road, or it will be difficult to earn points.”

Asked about Deportivo, Arrasate noted the Galician side was prepared to counter Osasuna’s pressure by bringing on players suited to breaking the press.

“They played all their skillful players centrally. We thought Villares would come in, but instead it was Lorenzo Amatucci, Mario Soriano, Luismi Cruz and Yeremay Pino, likely to beat our press. They are a talented team with a deep roster and proven chemistry,” Arrasate said. “When we had possession, we managed to break them down a bit, especially with direct play and crosses. Still, we couldn’t sustain it, and their talented players took over late, turning it into an uphill battle.”
